FIRST DAYS AT LIBERTY:
“I like computers and I like cars,” Jason told his job coach from across a picnic table at a local park nearby his home. Jason and Jennifer were meeting for the first time to set a plan for his employment goals. Jason presented himself as polite, smart, and willing to learn. Overall, Jason feels that he is the perfect candidate for a future job in the computer industry. Jason aspires to be an industrial designer and attends Pasadena City College at this time.
THE JOB SEARCH:
As his Job Coach Jennifer collaborated with him, they began to envision the type of job where Jason could be successful. Jason is proficient in many computer-related subjects that include: typing at 120 WPM, researching online, and fixing cars for resale. One day, Jennifer coordinated a meeting with the owner of Mobile Motorsports. This is a business that installs rims and stereo systems for customers. The owner of this business became interested in partnering with Liberty Employment Services in order to assist adults with disabilities to find jobs. The owner asked Jennifer to bring Jason in for an interview. The interview consisted of Jason presenting his resume and reviewing job expectations and duties.
Jason obtained the online sales and advertising position at Mobile Motorsports. After a few weeks, Jason listed hundreds of advertisements on Craigslist, OfferUp, Facebook, and Instagram. Jason’s extensive knowledge about cars became a huge asset to his co-workers because he is able to identify car parts with extensive and detailed knowledge (i.e., the year and make of the car parts and many Japanese car models) by memory. At Mobile Motorsports, Jason is often asked for assistance in many computer-related subjects. Also, Jason does odd jobs like sweeping, dusting, cleaning, and polishing (i.e., rims that are sold). Jason has proven himself to be an asset to his team and co-workers and his manager treats him like a family member. Each day, Jason loves to go to work and has been successfully employed since the end of April of 2019.
LOOKING TOWARD THE FUTURE:
Jason is passionate about this work and he is earning money to help with some of his living expenses while gaining relevant work experience. Jason will continue to work at Mobile Motorsports while he attends Pasadena City College. Meanwhile, his job coach will continue looking for other jobs that might be an even better fit for Jason’s skills and dreams so he can continue to grow and advance in the workplace.
